Economic Sanctions and Embargoes

Overview

This section focuses on country-specific economic sanctions and embargo programs.  These restrict to varying degrees trade, investments, travel, exchange of information or materials, and other kinds of activity that U.S. persons may conduct in sanctioned countries.  Currently the countries and regions that are subject to U.S. comprehensive embargoes are

  • Cuba
  • Iran
  • North Korea
  • Syria
  • Crimean region of Ukraine

Other countries may be subject to selective embargoes, which may be sectoral in nature or list-based.
