Export Controls and Traveling Abroad with Electronic Devices
U.S. Export Restrictions on Encrypted Devices
In many cases, electronic devices containing commercially available encryption software may be taken or shipped overseas temporarily under a U.S. government license exception, if the encrypted device:
- is being used for professional purposes or for personal use;
- will return within 12 months of the initial departure; and
- will be kept under the effective control of the traveler or in a secure location
This exception does not apply when the travel is to any country that is the subject of a U.S. government embargo.
